# Temporary phone number for Google verification SMS

A temporary number may receive one Google SMS only if the current Google screen offers SMS and accepts that individual number. It cannot create a recovery method for an account you cannot access, and it should not become the recovery phone for an account you plan to keep.

## Read the Google prompt before choosing a number

Google may ask for a phone during account creation or for a separate sign-in check. It may also offer a Google prompt, passkey, previously saved backup code or security key for an existing account. Those methods depend on what was already set up; buying a new SMS number cannot add them while you are locked out. Google's [2-Step Verification help](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185834)  says an SMS may be unavailable for a sign-in that looks different and that only the newest of several codes may work.

If the screen does not offer SMS to a new number, stop there. A Google-labelled directory entry cannot change an account-specific verification route or prove that a phone number will be accepted.

## Do not turn one code into a recovery dependency

Google's [recovery guidance](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/183723)  says recovery options vary by account and region and must be added while you can sign in. Its [phone guidance](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/12437868)  recommends your own text-enabled mobile phone for a recovery number. ## If a single SMS attempt fits

**Will a Google-labelled number always verify Gmail?**

No. Google decides whether to ask for a phone, accept the individual number and send a code for the current account flow.

**Can a new temporary number recover my old Google account?**

A new number cannot receive a code sent to an existing recovery phone. Use Google’s official recovery choices already available for that account.

**Can I keep this as my recovery phone?**

Do not depend on a short activation for later access. Google recommends your own text-enabled mobile phone for recovery.

**Why did Google not send SMS?**

It may have chosen a Google prompt or another method, withheld SMS for that sign-in, rejected the number, or not delivered before expiry. Read both screens.

**Are backup codes created by buying a number?**

No. They are an existing-account option only if you previously set them up and saved them.

**What if Google rejects the number immediately?**

Treat the stated rejection as an eligibility issue. Check Google’s current instructions and any eligible order cancellation before considering another number.
